About the area
George Town began in 1786 as a British trading port, and everyone who came to trade stayed to cook. Hokkien and Teochew families brought their noodles and coffee shops, Tamil Muslim traders brought nasi kandar and mamak tea, Peranakan households blended Chinese and Malay kitchens into Nyonya food, and Malay, Punjabi and Thai flavours joined in.
